Tips and Ideas for Wedding Rings

Wedding Rings

Most of us try to hold true to the tradition of wedding rings today, but as time goes, the traditions slowly change. Whether we choose our wedding rings to go with the tradition or step outside the box, picking the right wedding rings can be a little tricky.

Choosing Wedding Rings

Traditionally, wedding rings always match. If one is rose gold with filigree, then the other must be as well. The his and hers and matching all the way is not always the case in this modern age. While wedding rings can match with precision or carry a similar theme, wedding rings have become more individual. The common belief that matching rings are symbolic of matching partners is not actually the case. Couples choose different wedding rings for different reasons.

Everyone is unique and has their own individual fashion that is not always shared by their partner. While one partner prefers white gold, the other might desire the tough tungsten carbide. While you both could be Disney fans, you might favor Cinderella and your significant other favor Star Wars. The theme of the ring can be as unique and playful as each person desires, and should never be limited by the bounds of another. Wedding rings have become more about an expression of individuality in the effort to act as a symbol of marriage, whether it is a preferred metal or theme. Regardless of how different our wedding rings might be, they will always remain symbolic of a marriage union.

Choosing the Metal

Our individual personalities and preferences are important when choosing the metal of our wedding rings. Just as we select colors for the wedding, we choose a metal that matches our personality. The most important consideration to take to heart when choosing the metal of wedding rings is that it must be something we love so much that we can commit to wearing it everyday for the rest of our lives. There are many types of metals for wedding rings. Gold and silver are probably the most popular choice. However, there are many options that step away from tradition and make amazingly beautiful wedding rings. With so many combinations and choices available, this important decision can be challenging.

Platinum Wedding Rings

Platinum has become one of the most sought after metals for wedding rings. Platinum is a strong and durable metal that seems to just get better over time. Unlike other metals that require maintenance to maintain the brilliance, platinum maintains a bright luster that is less susceptible to aging. Antique platinum wedding rings can develop a satiny or slightly frosted texture. The patina effect of platinum is even more desirable.

There are some things to consider when it comes to platinum as a choice for our wedding rings. Platinum is an expensive and heavy metal that requires a colorless or near-colorless diamond to pull off the look, which also increases in price with the quality of the diamond. Due to the bright appearance, platinum is not suited for all types of stones, and not all diamonds make the cut.

Silver Wedding Rings

Fine silver is a soft precious metal that is commonly preferred with intricate designs. Fine silver is also known as pure silver or 99.9% pure. Sterling silver is a pure grade of silver, composed of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. Copper is added for durability. Most silver wedding rings are sterling silver.

There are a couple things to consider with sterling silver wedding rings. Sterling silver is not considered hypoallergenic, nor is the copper additive. There is a chance that your significant other could be allergic to the metals. The cost of silver wedding rings are approximately 1/90th of the price of platinum, and 1/60th of the price of gold. Also consider that silver tarnishes, and requires more maintenance to keep the luster. Silver, like platinum, requires a near-colorless diamond.

Yellow Gold

Gold is the most common precious metal of choice with wedding rings. Yellow gold is visually appealing, and compliments tinted diamonds that would not be compatible with silver and platinum bands. Also, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds create a beautiful contrast with yellow gold. Yellow gold is an expensive metal; although the price decreases with alloys that create 10K, 14K or 18K gold.

White Gold

Gold is not white. The color of white gold is achieved by combining other metals, such as platinum, palladium or even silver to lighten the color, and then the final touch occurs with the application of rhodium plating. Rhodium is another rare and expensive precious metal; however, electroplating only requires a thin layer of rhodium in the process. White gold is advantageous due to its resemblance to platinum at a fraction of the cost.
